Peace - Ludwig Knaus Critique #1

Artist: Ludwig Knaus
Title: Peace
Country: Germany
Medium: Oil on canvas

“Peace” by Ludwig Knaus is the painting that I chose to represent my concept. Ludwig Knaus, who lived from 1829 to 1910, was a German classic painting. Most of his portraits, which are genre in character, were painted with heavy colors but always in harmony. The painter used subject matter and color to represent an angel spreading peace to the world, symbolized by the flowers.
The subject matter of “Peace” is an angel wearing a white silk dress, her wings are open and she is leaning on a cloud, holding a basket of different types and colors of flowers.  The angel is gently tossing those flowers on the cherubs who are sitting on another cloud. They don’t have clothes on, which shows the ingenuity.
The medium of painting is oil on canvas and most of the colors are warm. The wings have shades of gold; the flowers are white, yellow, red and green.  The cloud is dark beige in contrast with the angel’s white dress and the light from the sky. The colors contribute to give movement for the painting.
Ludwig Knaus cared of every detail. All traces and colors combine to make a delicate image. Everyone who looks at the painting will have a good feeling, and that's exactly what the painter wants to demostrate: a moment of peace during hard times in the world.

Peace

"Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."
